Guidance and advice on databases and handling of personal and sensitive data

With the emergence of new databases with the ability to disseminate personal and sensitive data, AABC has sought advice and guidance from the Information Commissioner's Office to ensure that BCRPs are able to make reasoned and informed decisions concerning the purchase, operation and management of databases, including access by third party users. As new systems, which may not have sought the benefit of guidance from the ICO, present themselves to BCRPs as solutions to data sharing, it is important that they ascertain their suitability before committing themselves financially or facing difficulties of data compliance in the future.

Safer Socialising Award re-launched

AABC has re-launched the Safer Socialising Award in a simplified and more user-friendly format. The same principles about responsible alcohol retailing have been retained, but the categories of licensed premises have been simplified and the requirements codified to make it easier for licensees to apply for the award and simpler for BCRPs to assess and manage. Assessment has been revised upowards to every two years from annually.

Sending personal or sensitive data

The ICO has expressed the view that BCRPs who send personal or sensitive data via email should do so in a secure manner where this is possible. If there is a need to send personal or sensitive data via email, partnerships should consider using the Criminal Justice Secure Email service.

The Brighton & Hove Business Crime Reduction Partnership [BCRP] has been asked by the Sussex Central Bench to give a series of 5 presentations on its work over five days in March to ensure that magistrates understand and support its work with the business community in collaboration with Sussex Police and Brighton & Hove City Council.

Home Secretary announces final conditions of a proposed mandatory code for alcohol retailers

The conditions will be applied to all alcohol retailers to ensure consistent good practice and to crack down on problem premises, where irresponsible drinking could put individuals at risk and lead to crime and anti-social behaviour.

The AABC conference website has been completed and can now be accessed to view the programme, to book delegate places, book accomodation and download the Partnership Excellence Awards application forms. This is the only national conference to focus exclusively on business crime partnerships and their work and provides an essential information and networking opportunity for everyone whose work encompasses business crime.

Chair of Neath Port Talbot BCRP wins MBE in New Year honours

In what is believed to be a first for a BCRP, Chris Morgan, 36, from Neath, who was chair of Safer Neath Port Talbot BCRP from 2005 until November 2009 has been awarded with an MBE in recognition of his work in helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in and around the Aberafan shopping centre. Working with the ambulance service he also helped recruit and train more than 40 first responders to deal with medical emergencies in Port Talbot.

Change of chief executive at AABC

Mike Schuck has announced that as of the 1st January 2010 he will be standing down as CEO of AABC, after 6 years of service, in order to pursue a less hectic lifestyle. Mike, a former senior officer in the Metropolitan Police and Director BRC Retail Crime Policy, was instrumental in establishing AABC and its growth into a national body for business crime reduction partnerships.

Swansea BCRP to ban violent hospital patients from pubs and clubs

Working with police, local hospitals and the Safer Swansea partnership, Swansea BCRP has agreed a process to exclude from city centre pubs and clubs people who are taken to hospital either as patients or who are accompanying patients, if they are violent or abusive to staff and it is established that they have been drinking in the city centre.

Home Office minister urges support for business crime
