Sentencing Council launches new guideline for assault offences

The guideline aims to ensure a consistent and proportionate approach to sentencing, with convicted offenders receiving a sentence that reflects both the harm they have caused to their victim and their culpability. The guideline sets out that it is an aggravating factor to an assault where it is an 'offence committed against those working in the public sector or providing a service to the public'. The broad wording would encompass both those providing vital services to the public, such as emergency services personnel, but also those working, for example, as pub staff and shop workers.

The ABCP annual national conference will be taking place at the Hilton Hotel, Coventry on Thursday, 24th May, 2012. This is an excellent central venue, close to junction 2 of the M6 and M69 and with ample free parking for delegates. This is the only national event where partnerships, police, retailers and other colleagues can meet, network and find out what about developments in partnership operation and how the future will look.

As one of the longest established business crime partnerships, NRCI has served as a model for other partnerships starting up and with over 150 members, is a key partner with police and other agencies in the county.

Home Office Minister visits Chester Partnership

The Home Office Minister for crime reduction, Lord Henley, paid the first ever ministerial visit to a partnership when he spent the day in Chester on Friday, 20th January. He spent the day listening to what the partnership does and how it works and speaking to the crime manager, businesses, police and local authority members, who all voiced their support for the good work carried out by the partnership.

British Retail Consortium retail crime survey reports a reduction in shop theft.

The British Retail Consortium's (BRC's) Retail Crime Survey 2011, published last Monday shows fewer incidents for many types of crime but each incident on average has been more costly and total losses have increased sharply compared with the previous year. Expenditure on crime prevention by retailers taking part in the survey rose by 1.4 per cent to £214 million, a median spend of £700,000 per company. This has substantially reduced incidents of opportunistic crime, but combating the rise in violent crime retailers and their staff are exposed to requires the support of law makers and enforcers.

North East Business Crime Conference, 2012

A free of charge conference and exhibition is being held at the Gateshead Marriott on Thursday 2nd February 2012. The aim is to bring together businesses based in the North East to launch the newly formed North East Business Crime Centre to provide a single regional centre of excellence to assist in preventing, detecting and deterring crime, in a cohesive partnership approach.

'Stripping the Heart Out of Britain' - ACPO Inaugural Non-Ferrous Metal Theft Seminar

As worldwide prices of copper, lead and other non-ferrous metals continue to rise, metal theft has become one of the most serious crimes blighting our communities. It is estimated to be costing the British economy in excess of £800 million per year. The first ACPO national forum will provide a platform for those involved in tackling these crimes both in rural areas and towns and cities to discuss the current issues and help to formulate a collaborative plan for the future.

Safer Business Award for Somerset West BCRP

Somerset West BAC celebrated the award of their distinction SBA at a recent evening awards ceremony. Created in 2011, following the merger of Taunton retailers against crime and the Bridgwater & Burnham security group, the partnership was won a number of accolades for its innovative and pragmatic approaches to crime reduction. SWBAC also presented Safer Business Award plaques to Sedgemoor district council and Taunton Deane borough council to show that the towns are a safe environment for businesses to grow and to invest in.

The Greater Manchester towns of Bolton and Farnworth have around 225 CCTV cameras monitoring shops, bars, car parks and the surrounding industrial estates. The information provided by these cameras is augmented by a diverse range of different radio solutions, seamlessly integrated in a single control room by the C-Soft Plus dispatcher, touchscreen technology from Cyfas.

Truckwatch Northwest conference

Truckwatch Northwest will be running a free conference on 31st January at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston. The conference will highlight the different ways in which freight crime affects everyone; the difficulties in gauging the extent of the problem through reporting and recording of freight crime; and how an increased understanding of the extent of the problem can assist with the development of security measures to address and reduce the problems.

Global Retail Theft Barometer records increase in UK theft from a shop

The report, from professor Joshua Bamfield (right) of the Centre for Retail Research shows that shrinkage overall cost UK retailers £4.890 billion in the 12 months to June 2011 compared with £4.417 billion in the year to June 2010. Shrinkage,(which includes crime and non-crime losses) as a percentage of sales was an average of 1.37%, which is an increase on 2010.

ABCP has created a partnership council to better represent the views of member partnerships across the country. There are eight groups - North West, Wales, South West, Sussex, Kent, South Midlands, London and Yorkshire. Chairmen of those groups will meet with Richard Barron and Mike Schuck regularly to discuss issues and help agree how and where the organisation should go.

The fund is worth £5 million in 2011/12, with a further £5 million set aside for 2012/13.
