The Safer Business Award

AABC has developed the Safer Business Award (SBA) to ensure that there are nationally recognised and accepted standards for the management and operation of business crime reduction partnerships. To ensure those standards are maintained, partnerships are inspected by AABC before being accredited.

AABC has worked with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and ACPO to develop partnership codes of practice and advice to ensure that partnerships are able to operate lawfully and in compliance with the Data Protection Act, 1998. The AABC partnership codes of practice are the only such codes which have been submitted to the ICO who has agreed that they reflect the requirements of the Act and are fit for purpose. We are in regular contact with the ICO on behalf of our members to seek advice and guidance on new issues relating to the DPA.

Taking into account the views of the ICO and the essential part that the SBA plays in data compliance, the SBA will be inspected and accredited every two years. AABC crime managers will visit holders prior to its expiry to provide a free health check, which will allow amendments or modifications to be made before the accreditation inspection. The SBA demonstrates that partnerships operate legally, to high standards, and reflects their increasing professionalism. It helps to develop wider recognition of the value of their work, enhances relationships with police and other agencies and is the gateway for regional and national data sharing.

As part of the SBA development process we have reviewed the accreditation criteria and because of the range of standard attained within the criteria, we have created two SBA award levels. For those partnerships who are well advanced and who have shown evidence of greater achievement, there will be a distinction grade. For those partnerships which are less well advanced in their development programme, there will be a pass grade.

AABC provides advice and information to help establish new partnerships and achieve the SBA standard. We also provide advice to ensure that existing Business Crime Partnership operate within the law and achieve the Safer Business Award.  This confirms that the partnership is managed and operates to nationally agreed standards.  Please go to the 'Contact Us' page for more information.

To recognise the achievement of the Safer Business Award, AABC provides high quality SBA certificates for both Pass and Distinction. The certificates may be framed and presented at your local award ceremony.

SBA Documentation and Advice can be downloaded from the members' area.

Use of the 'Safer Business Award' designation, logo, plaque or certificates may not be used by any partnership which does not possess a current Safer Business Award, nor by any other organisation without the written consent of Action Against Business Crime.
