Northampton Retail Crime Initiative joins ABCP

We are delighted that Northampton Retail Crime Initiative (NRCI) has decided to join ABCP. As one of the longest established business crime partnerships, NRCI has served as a model for other partnerships starting up and with over 150 members, is a key partner with police and other agencies in the county.

NRCI is also a member of ABCP’s South Midlands regional partnership which includes partnerships in Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Thames Valley Police areas.

Michael Brennan, regional loss prevention manager for House of Fraser and chairman of NRCI said, ‘We felt is was the right thing to do to join ABCP and be associated with the national body. We want to expand services to our members and membership of ABCP and achievement of the Safer Business Award standard will mean that we can demonstrate to our members, the police and others, that we are determined to raise our profile and make a major contribution to crime prevention and community safety in these difficult times.’

Mike Schuck, operations director for ABCP said, ‘We are delighted that NRCI has shown confidence in us and has decided to join. It will strengthen their voice in the county and on the regional forum and provide links to other partnerships nationally. There are going to be significant changes to business crime reduction as a consequence of reduced public spending and ABCP intends to ensure that the valuable contribution of partnerships is recognised as an important element of local community safety.’

Town Team pilot bids launched

The Department of Communities and Local Government is looking to support twelve pilots with funding of up to £100,000 for each, depending on the amount sought by and their assessment of individual bids. They will be awarded to partnerships in England that demonstrate the best fit with the selection criteria. This will be paid through s31 un-ring-fenced revenue grant, paid directly to the relevant local authority. Each partnership will, therefore, need to identify an Accountable Body (local authority) to receive the grant, if they are not, themselves, a local authority. We expect local authorities in receipt of grant to work constructively with their communities, through their Town Team, in using funding. We will also be looking to provide other, non-financial support for the pilots More...

The guideline aims to ensure a consistent and proportionate approach to sentencing, with convicted offenders receiving a sentence that reflects both the harm they have caused to their victim and their culpability. The guideline sets out that it is an aggravating factor to an assault where it is an 'offence committed against those working in the public sector or providing a service to the public'. The broad wording would encompass both those providing vital services to the public, such as emergency services personnel, but also those working, for example, as pub staff and shop workers. More...
