Taunton Retailers Against Crime (TRAC) hosts first awards ceremony

Taunton Retailers Against Crime hosted their inaugural awards ceremony on 5th August to recognise efforts of partnership members in reducing crime and improving community safety at a dinner in the Long Room at Somerset county cricket ground, Taunton.

The first award for the day-time cconomy member was won by Superdrug. Stock losses have been reduced from £1,100 per week to £250 per week. This significant reduction is as a result of management and staff endorsing the TRAC policy of deterring crime. The award recognised that these results were achieved without the assistance of security staff or equipment other than a TRAC radio and access to the TRAC intranet. Superdrug also enforce the TRAC exclusion scheme, log incident reports and regularly attend meetings.

The second award was for the night time economy member and went to the Street Pastors, a voluntary group who look after vulnerable people enjoying the town’s night life. Their presence on the streets is reassuring and improves community safety as well as reducing crime. The photo shows Inspector Sam Williams and Barbra Winterson from the Street Pastors

The third award was for the individual of the year.  The joint winners were Andy Guest and Graham Lethaby who are employed by Chubb Security at Sainsbury's. They received the award for their commitment to reducing crime in their area,  reducing  store losses and enforcing our deter and exclusion policies.  But the icing on the cake is their care for neighbouring businesses. They will assist whenever needed and will notify other stores if an offender is seen in the area. They have an excellent relationship with police and we are sure that if they were not as passionate about their role, there would be more crime incidents in their area.

The final award was for the police officer of the year. Police involvement is vital and a number of the officers that we deal with deliver excellent service to our members. The winner was PCSO Ben Dilworth-Smith for his continuous support for the partnership and our members and his efforts in helping to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.

The guideline aims to ensure a consistent and proportionate approach to sentencing, with convicted offenders receiving a sentence that reflects both the harm they have caused to their victim and their culpability. The broad wording would encompass both those providing vital services to the public, such as emergency services personnel, but also those working, for example, as pub staff and shop workers. More...

British Retail Consortium retail crime survey reports a reduction in shop theft.

The British Retail Consortium's (BRC's) Retail Crime Survey 2011, published last Monday shows fewer incidents for many types of crime but each incident on average has been more costly and total losses have increased sharply compared with the previous year. Expenditure on crime prevention by retailers taking part in the survey rose by 1.4 per cent to £214 million, a median spend of £700,000 per company. This has substantially reduced incidents of opportunistic crime, but combating the rise in violent crime retailers and their staff are exposed to requires the support of law makers and enforcers.
