Bournemouth sponsors The Big Issue

Bournemouth Business Reducing Crime has agreed with The Big Issue office in the town to register all their sellers to ensure that only genuine sellers are permitted.

Crime manager Kevin Strudwick explained, 'We wanted to sponsor this initiative after experiencing many crime / anti-social problems relating to some Big Issue sellers.

'The idea of a bright fluorecent jacket is to make the vendors more visible and control effectively who the vendor is, through a numbered vest and clear ID badge on the front.'

BBRC chairman Andy Duck said, 'Already this has reduced complaints from the public and stores alike of aggressive, threatening behaviour and operating whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  The rogue sellers have dissapeared leaving genuine sellers free from bullying and intimidation.

'Each vendor is responsible for purchasing their own vest at a cost of £15.00, so they look after them. This is a win win initiative for all, the vests also carry our slogan, Making Bournemouth A Safer Place.'

Each Big Issue seller has a written code of practice which sets out the standard of conduct expected, the exact pitch they can use, which is marked out, and that they must not be under the influence of drink or drugs and do not harrass or abuse the public.  There is a complaint form which members can fill in and send to the Big Issue office if any of the conditions are breached.
