Substitution attacks on chip & pin machines
Southampton Business Against Crime have had stores hit by 'substitution' attacks. This is achieved when a person enters a store with some official-looking identification and states that their chip & pin machine requires servicing.
They take away the original chip & pin machine and leave a substitute, which has been altered to store cardholder details of transactions. A week later they return and replace the original machine, taking away the duplicate from which data can then be down-loaded and used to commit fraud
This has been used against both small and chain stores and we have attached a booklet from APACS which sets out in more detail how to prevent this type of fraud.
